Karl Lagerfeld Cat Inheritance Dispute: Housekeeper Says Legal Fight Continues Over Choupette’s Care

The ongoing dispute over Karl Lagerfeld’s estate has taken another turn, as his former housekeeper, Françoise Caçote, says she has yet to receive any funds from the designer’s reported inheritance arrangement intended to support his famous cat, Choupette.

In a recent statement, Caçote emphasized that she is pursuing the matter legally, saying: “I want to be completely transparent: today, we have received absolutely nothing.” She explained that due to the complexity of the situation, she has had to hire lawyers to try to ensure that Lagerfeld’s wishes are properly respected and that the inheritance is secured in her name for the cat’s benefit.

Choupette’s agent, Lucas Bérullier, supported Caçote’s claims, noting that under French law animals cannot directly inherit assets. “The law is the law. A cat can’t own a bank account,” he said, while also confirming that Caçote currently lives in an apartment reportedly given to her by Lagerfeld before his death.

Caçote added that her priority remains the wellbeing of Choupette, stating that she is doing her best to ensure the cat “wants for nothing,” providing full care, love, and attention while the legal situation is resolved. She also said she continues working part-time to support the cat’s lifestyle.

Despite the legal uncertainty, Caçote expressed hope for an amicable resolution, stressing that the most important outcome is that Choupette remains safe, loved, and protected in the way Lagerfeld would have wanted.
