The abandoned dog was eventually discovered by Donna Lochmann, chief life-saving officer with Stray Rescue of St. Louis. But reaching him proved far more difficult than simply opening a door.

The large gray dog, later named Oscar Mayer, was trapped below ground level inside the basement of a vacant house. The only possible escape route was a small basement window that was challenging to access and far beyond the frightened dog's reach.

Refusing to leave him behind, Donna devised a creative rescue plan.

Using an old mattress leaned against a table and a wooden door placed on top for stability, she carefully constructed a makeshift ramp leading to the basement window. The setup offered Oscar Mayer a chance at freedom, but first he would need to trust the people trying to help him.

For a dog stranded in an unfamiliar and frightening environment, climbing toward a narrow window required tremendous courage.

With Donna patiently encouraging him every step of the way, Oscar slowly approached the makeshift ramp. As he gained confidence, he carefully climbed upward. The rescue reached a heartwarming climax when Oscar finally placed his front paws on the wooden platform, allowing Donna to gently pull him through the window and into safety.

The emotional rescue marked the beginning of a completely new life.

Once outside, Oscar Mayer quickly revealed his loving personality. Despite everything he had endured, the resilient dog proved to be incredibly friendly, affectionate, and eager for human companionship. His sweet temperament immediately won the hearts of rescuers and everyone he encountered.
