Oprah Winfrey Says Dogs Helped Her Survive Life’s Hardest Moments
Oprah Winfrey’s lifelong connection with dogs runs far deeper than simple pet ownership. For her, dogs became comfort, protection, and emotional support during some of the most painful chapters of her life.
That bond is now at the center of a new series where each four-minute episode highlights the powerful relationship between dogs and their owners.
One episode follows Chad Brown, a U.S. Navy veteran who served in Somalia and later struggled with PTSD after returning home. His 11-year-old Labrador service dog, Axe, helped him heal emotionally and inspired him to create the nonprofit organization Love is King, which supports veterans and at-risk youth.
“Everybody who has a dog has a story,” Oprah said while discussing the series.
Her own story started when she was a child living in Milwaukee with her single mother. At the time, the family relied on welfare, but Oprah became determined to get a dog of her own. She secretly saved her lunch money — just 25 cents at a time — until she finally had enough to buy a black cockapoo named Simone for $7.25.
Bringing the dog home, however, required some creativity.
Oprah admitted she told her mother that her gym teacher needed someone to temporarily watch the dog while away on vacation. As days turned into weeks, she continued inventing stories, hoping her mother would eventually grow attached to Simone.
“She was my refuge,” Oprah later recalled while speaking about the difficult period of her childhood when she was experiencing abuse. “Dogs have always been the friend in my life when everything else around me was falling apart.”
Eventually, her mother agreed to keep the dog. But when Oprah later moved in with her father at 14 years old, Simone still wasn’t allowed inside the house and had to sleep outdoors.
“I would sit on the porch at night just to be with him,” she remembered.
About a year later, Simone died from mange, leaving a lasting emotional impact on Oprah. Yet her connection with dogs only grew stronger over time.
Throughout her life, Oprah has owned and loved more than 20 dogs, each leaving a unique mark on her heart. One of the deepest losses came in 2018 when her beloved golden retriever Luke passed away.
She once described Luke as her “soul dog,” saying his death profoundly affected her spirituality and emotional outlook.
“He had the biggest soul ever,” Oprah said. “When I transition, Luke will be there to greet me.”
