A missing Belgian Malinois named Petra was safely reunited with her owner after disappearing for three days in Kentucky’s Daniel Boone National Forest — all thanks to a GPS collar that worked without cell service.
A Routine Game of Fetch Turns Into a Scare
On April 13, Petra, an energetic and intelligent Belgian Malinois, went missing during a game of fetch with her owner, Lisa Jenkins, a 65-year-old retiree who lives part-time in a cabin inside the vast forest.
The peaceful outdoor setting is normally perfect for Petra, who enjoys daily activities near the lake. However, everything changed when she spotted a squirrel and suddenly ran off.
“I tried to chase her, but the area around the lake has very steep shale cliffs. It was impossible to reach her,” Jenkins said, describing the frightening moment.
Lost in Over 700,000 Acres of Wilderness
Daniel Boone National Forest covers more than 700,000 acres of dense woodland. With no cell phone reception in the area, finding Petra seemed nearly impossible.
Fortunately, Jenkins had equipped her dog with a Fi GPS collar, which allows real-time tracking even without cellular coverage. The collar continued sending location updates through the app, giving Jenkins hope.
For three emotional days, she monitored Petra’s movements as the dog roamed through the forest.
A Moment of Hope
After tracking the signals, Jenkins noticed Petra’s location moving closer to an accessible area. Using the GPS data, she began searching on foot.
Eventually, the two were reunited.
“We ran into each other’s arms. I cried, and she held onto my shoulders,” Jenkins shared about the emotional moment.
According to the collar manufacturer, the timing was crucial — the battery level had dropped to just 4% at the time of the reunion.
Petra Is Safe and Recovering
Thankfully, Petra returned home unharmed and is now doing well. Jenkins continues to use the GPS collar whenever Petra is outside.
“No matter how loyal your dog is, they can still get distracted,” she explained. “She would have been lost forever in unfamiliar territory without it.”
Why GPS Collars Can Save Pets
Petra’s story highlights the importance of modern pet tracking technology, especially for dogs who spend time outdoors or in remote areas. GPS collars can:
- Provide real-time location tracking
- Work in areas without cell reception
- Offer peace of mind for pet owners
- Increase the chances of safe recovery
