A South Florida family is breathing a deep sigh of relief after being reunited with their two missing dogs following a destructive fire that wiped out their long-standing businesses in Opa-locka.

The fire broke out on the evening of Monday, May 25, engulfing and destroying JC Motors and Gary Used Auto Parts, two businesses owned by the Lopez family for more than 30 years, according to NBC Miami and Local 10 News.

Amid the devastation, the family faced another heartbreaking fear—believing their two beloved dogs, Fantasma and Mimi, may have died in the blaze.

“I don’t have kids, so those are my kids,” said Gary Lopez, the family’s son and store manager, expressing the deep bond he shares with the dogs.

Gary Lopez remained outside the burned remains of the property throughout the night, holding onto hope despite the destruction. After more than 17 hours of uncertainty, he heard something unexpected—barking coming from the rubble.

Moments later, the emotional reunion unfolded.

The two dogs ran straight toward him, overjoyed and relieved. In a touching moment, they immediately rolled over for belly rubs as if nothing had happened.

“That feeling can’t be beat,” Lopez said, visibly emotional. “These are smart dogs.”

He added, “I just felt relief. That’s like your best friend.”

Lopez’s mother, who was also present during the reunion, broke into tears when she saw Fantasma and Mimi alive. Overcome with emotion, she shouted in Spanish, “¡Están salvados!” (“You’re saved!”)

The moment marked a rare bright light in an otherwise devastating event for the Lopez family, who lost decades of work in the fire but regained what they feared most—their beloved companions.

There were no reported injuries in the fire that destroyed two family-owned businesses in Opa-locka, Florida. Authorities confirmed that Miami-Dade Fire Rescue is actively investigating the cause of the incident.

While the Lopez family has been relieved to find their two missing dogs alive, Fantasma and Mimi, the emotional relief is overshadowed by the scale of their losses.

The blaze completely destroyed JC Motors and Gary Used Auto Parts, businesses that had been operated by the family for more than three decades.

“This place meant the world to us — income, our everything — now left stranded,” said Gary Lopez in an interview with Local 10 News.

He reflected on the long history behind the businesses, explaining that the impact goes far beyond a single day of loss.

“This was devastating. It's not two days, you know, it's 30 years,” he said. “My father started as an employee, worked his way up and eventually got the opportunity to buy it.”

Now, the family is facing an uncertain future. Beyond the destruction of their livelihood, the fire has affected 11 employees and their families, all of whom are now dealing with job insecurity.

In response, the Lopez family has launched a GoFundMe campaign to help support both the business recovery efforts and the workers impacted by the fire. The fundraiser aims to provide financial relief during what the family describes as an overwhelming transition period.

Despite the hardship, the family continues to express gratitude for the safe return of Fantasma and Mimi, a small but powerful moment of hope amid the devastation.

As the Lopez family continues to recover from the fire that destroyed their long-running businesses in Opa-locka, Florida, they are highlighting the broader human impact behind the loss.

In a message shared on their fundraising page, the family emphasized that the devastation extends beyond buildings and income, affecting many lives connected to the business.

“Behind every employee there is a home, children, and loved ones who depend on this business to move forward,” they wrote.

The GoFundMe campaign was launched to support the recovery efforts and assist 11 employees and their families who are now facing financial uncertainty after the destruction of JC Motors and Gary Used Auto Parts.

The family also expressed hope that community support will help them begin rebuilding after more than 30 years of work were lost in the fire.

“Every dollar truly makes a difference, because little by little, everything can be rebuilt,” they added.

While the emotional reunion with their dogs, Fantasma and Mimi, brought a moment of relief, the Lopez family says the road ahead remains difficult as they work to rebuild their business and support those affected.
