🐶 A Young Golden Retriever Died After Eating a Toxic Mushroom During a Walk

What started as a normal evening walk turned into a heartbreaking tragedy for Chloe Julian and her family after their beloved dog, Bogey, accidentally ate a toxic mushroom.

Bogey, a red golden retriever who had just celebrated his first birthday in March, was known for his playful personality, love of tennis balls, and carrying around his favorite stuffed bear. According to Chloe, he quickly became the center of their lives.

On May 1, while staying with family in Santa Clarita, California, Bogey ate part of a mushroom during a walk. Although Chloe’s fiancé’s mother tried to stop him and remove it from his mouth, he had already swallowed some of it.

Within hours, Bogey became seriously ill. He began vomiting repeatedly and could no longer keep food or water down. The family rushed him to an emergency veterinarian, where doctors started IV fluids, medications, and treatments to protect his liver and fight dehydration.

At first, no one knew exactly what type of mushroom Bogey had eaten. Family members collected a sample and contacted poison control and mushroom experts for help identifying it.

As Bogey’s condition worsened, Chloe received a devastating call telling her that her dog had only a small chance of surviving. She immediately rushed to be by his side.

Even while suffering, Bogey still showed love to his family. Chloe remembers him wagging his tail when she gently touched his nose, despite being weak and in pain.

Eventually, experts identified the mushroom as Amanita phalloides, commonly known as the deadly “death cap” mushroom — one of the most poisonous mushrooms in the world and responsible for many fatal poisonings in both humans and animals.

Veterinarians later confirmed that Bogey’s liver was failing and the toxins had spread too far through his body. Faced with heartbreaking news, the family made the painful decision to let him go peacefully.

Before saying goodbye, they carried Bogey outside to feel the sunshine one last time and took him on a final walk. Chloe says she will never forget how, even in his final moments, Bogey picked up his favorite stuffed bear and handed it to the veterinarian, almost as if he was saying thank you.

Since losing Bogey, Chloe has been sharing his story online to warn other pet owners about the dangers of toxic mushrooms. She hopes others will act immediately if their pets eat anything suspicious, because quick treatment can sometimes save a dog’s life.

Bogey’s story is a heartbreaking reminder that even small dangers during everyday walks can become deadly — and that every moment with our pets is precious. 🐾
