🐶 When Love Breaks the Rules: The Story of Hazel and Toya Stewart

On a cold night in March in Oklahoma City, Toya Stewart made a decision that shocked many people — but touched the hearts of dog lovers everywhere. She broke into an animal shelter to save her beloved dog, Hazel, from being euthanized.

Hazel was not just a pet. She was family.

For years, Hazel, a Pit Bull, stayed beside Stewart through some of the hardest moments of her life, including homelessness and an abusive relationship. No matter what happened, Hazel remained loyal and loving. Stewart says Hazel gave her comfort when she felt alone and broken.

But after several biting incidents involving a mailman and another dog, local authorities labeled Hazel as dangerous. A court ordered the dog to be euthanized.

Stewart tried everything she could to stop it. She appealed the decision and searched for legal options, hoping someone would give Hazel another chance. But when all hope seemed gone, she made a desperate choice.

Using a drone to study the shelter, Stewart planned a way inside. After failed attempts, she finally broke a window, reached Hazel’s kennel, and escaped with her dog under the shelter fence.

“I didn’t want to hurt anyone,” Stewart later said. “I just wanted my dog.”

For a few days, Hazel was home again — safe beside the person who loved her most. But police eventually found them. Stewart was arrested, and Hazel was returned to the shelter.

Sadly, Hazel was euthanized anyway.

The story quickly spread online, leaving many people heartbroken and asking difficult questions about animal shelters, dangerous dog laws, and breed discrimination. Because Hazel was a Pit Bull, many believe she faced harsher judgment simply because of her breed.

Across the United States, thousands of dogs enter shelters every year, and many never make it out. According to animal welfare organizations, Pit Bull-type dogs are among the most common breeds euthanized in shelters due to overcrowding and stigma.

Hazel’s story became more than just one woman trying to save her dog. It became a symbol of the emotional bond between humans and animals — and the painful reality many pet owners face when the system leaves no second chances.

Even though Stewart could not save Hazel’s life, she made sure her dog knew one important thing in the end
