A dog dad and his beloved pup have finally been reunited more than a year after devastating wildfires destroyed their home in Los Angeles, proving that even after tragedy, hope can still bring families back together.
Dominic and his “cuddly lab mix,” Blade, escaped the deadly Eaton Fire in January 2025 in the Altadena area. Although they survived the flames, their home was completely destroyed, leaving them suddenly displaced. With no stable place to stay while searching for new housing, Dominic made the difficult decision to place Blade in emergency boarding at the local animal shelter so he would be safe and cared for during the transition.
Blade was taken in by Pasadena Humane, where staff committed to providing long-term care for pets affected by the wildfires. What was expected to be a temporary stay turned into 15 months of support as Dominic worked to rebuild his life. During that time, Blade became a well-loved member of the shelter community. Staff made sure he received daily walks, playtime, enrichment activities, and plenty of affection. According to the shelter, he enjoyed snuggling with call center staff, visiting the shelter shop for treats, and even playing with cardboard boxes—one of his favorite activities.
The shelter shared that many families were in similar situations after the fires, suddenly losing their homes and possessions. Blade was one of many pets who remained in their care for months, and in some cases over a year, as the organization continued supporting the community in the aftermath of the disaster.
Finally, in April 2026, Dominic returned to pick up Blade for good. The reunion was deeply emotional. Shelter staff described how there wasn’t a dry eye in the room when Dominic walked in. Blade immediately recognized his dad, his excitement lighting up the space. The shelter noted they had never seen him happier than in that moment.
