A Colorado woman is asking the public for help after her service dog reportedly disappeared from her own yard in Denver.
Hannah Cummins, who operates a daycare in the city, says her 6-year-old chihuahua-greyhound mix named Opal went missing on Saturday, May 16, near Pecos Street and 33rd Avenue.
Cummins explained that she briefly stepped inside her home to move furniture while Opal was relaxing outside in the sun. When she returned moments later, the dog was gone.
“She’s been with me for six years. I rescued her six years ago, and it’s just really hard,” Cummins told CBS News.
Opal is not just a pet—she is a trained service animal who works closely with children at Cummins’ daycare, helping them navigate emotional and social challenges during transitions and difficult moments.
“She works with kids who are having any social, emotional needs,” Cummins said. “When they’re first coming into the school, when they’re transitioning, she works with them one on one.”
The disappearance has deeply affected the children she supported. Seven-year-old Layla, who has known Opal since she was young, said, “She kind of just made me feel like if I was sad or something, she would kind of support me.”
Cummins believes Opal may have been taken rather than lost, noting that several neighbors and a nearby business reportedly saw an unhoused man with a dog matching Opal’s description in the Highlands area.
“There’s multiple people that have said that they’ve seen Opal,” she added.
The situation has also attracted online scammers, with Cummins reporting fake messages, requests for money, and even AI-generated images and videos of a dog resembling Opal. One such video deeply upset her, as it appeared convincingly realistic at first glance but was later identified as artificial.
Cummins has filed a report with the Denver Police Department and continues to urge anyone with credible information to come forward.
“I just want her home,” she said.
